WORD OF THE WEEK  Flitch: either a slab of wood cut from a tree trunk and used to make planks or (originally) a slab of bacon

 

MOOD 2017  Join us in the park this Wednesday the 19th at 6 PM for music from Ryan McNally and The Band Room Band.  The Friends will be running a 50/50 raffle during the show.  The next library concert in the Music on the Oswegatchie Delta series is August 24th.

 

POMPOM DROP  Help pompoms get to their destinations by constructing a series of chutes this Thursday the 20th at 2 PM.

 

FAMILY BOOK CLUB  We’ll be making miniature bows and arrows and discussing Wild Born by Brandon Mull this Thursday at 5 PM.

 

FAMILY CONCERT  Musician Tom Seiling will be here this Saturday the 22nd at 2 PM for a free fun family concert.  Join us!

WORD OF THE WEEK  Roseate: Pink in color, like a rose; often used to describe a sunrise.  Can also be used to describe an overly-optimistic outlook on life.

 

ART SHOW  Stop in Monday through Friday this week to view artwork created by patrons of the Seaway House.  The pieces are on display upstairs in the auditorium.  There will be a reception from 12 – 2 PM on Wednesday the 12th, featuring a special performance from the Lighthouse Band.

 

SOCIAL HOUR  After the reception, join us for our monthly social hour this Wednesday the 12th at 2 PM.  We’ll have coffee, treats, and conversation.

WORD OF THE WEEK Touchpaper: The niter-infused strip of paper used as a fuse for fireworks (can also be used metaphorically, as an action that ignites anger or a fight)

 

LIBRARY HOLIDAY The library is closed in celebration of Independence Day today, Tuesday July 4th.

 

LEGO CHALLENGE Can Lego blocks solve every problem? Probably not. But children ages 6 and up are invited to try building a solution to a puzzle we’ll pose. Join us this Thursday the 6th at 2 PM.

 

FREE CONCERT MOOD will present their second summer concert in the park this Thursday the 6th at 6 PM. We recommend bringing blankets or chairs to better enjoy the music in comfort. The Friends of the Library will be running a 50/50 raffle during the show.

WORD OF THE WEEK  Burgeon: to grow rapidly, like a budding flower

 

RAFFLE  The Friends of the Library are raffling off a twin-sized quilt featuring the characters of Angry Birds Star Wars.  Tickets are $2 each or $3 for $5, and the drawing will be on July 23rd.  The quilt is hanging up in the library foyer.

 

FAMILY BOOK CLUB  Join us this Thursday the 29th at 5:30 PM to discuss Flora and Ulysses.  We’ll be writing squirrelly poetry on classic typewriters.

 

LIBRARY HOLIDAY  The library will be closed in celebration of Independence Day on Tuesday, July 4th

WORD OF THE WEEK  Ignescent: capable of or actually producing sparks, like a flint used for fire-starting; can also refer to a person in a “fiery” mood

 

MOVIE NIGHT  Be our guest this Thursday the 22nd at 5:30 PM for popcorn, drinks, and a live-action Disney movie on the screen in our auditorium.

 

MUSIC  The MOOD (Music on the Oswegatchie Delta) Concert series will have performances in Library Park this summer.  The shows will be June 22, July 6, July 19, and August 24 at 6 PM at the gazebo.  Please bring your own chairs or blankets to sit on.  The Friends of the Library will be holding a 50/50 raffle during each concert.

 

BOOK SALE  The Friends of the Library will be holding their summer book sale from 5 PM on July 20th (a Thursday) to 5 PM July 28th (a Friday.)  We are no longer accepting donations for the sale due to a lack of space.  If you have items you wish to donate, please hang on to them until the Fall.  Contact library director Penny Kerfien with any questions.

WORD OF THE WEEK  Bletcherous: ugly, either simply visually or because the object in question was poorly designed for its intended task

 

SOCIAL HOUR  Stop in for coffee, treats, and conversation this Wednesday the 14th at 2 PM.

 

SCULPT  This Thursday the 15th we will be running a family craft featuring salt dough.  Let your imagination run free and join us at 5 PM to create a masterpiece (or at least a lump of dough you can take home.)

WORD OF THE WEEK  Orrery: a clockwork-powered model of the Solar System, or a clockwork model of the Sun, Moon, and Earth

 

JUNE PROGRAMS  Next Thursday the 8th at 2 PM we’ll be holding a simple and quick “bubble painting” class for adults.  Social Hour will be the following Wednesday (the 14th,) also at 2 PM.  Computer help hours will be held on Saturdays the 3rd and 17th from 11 AM – 12 PM and Tuesdays the 6th and 27th from 6 – 7 PM.  This month’s Family Book Club selection is Kate DiCamillo’s Flora and Ulysses.  Join us for a discussion and squirrelly activity based on the book on June 29th at 5:30 PM

 

REGULAR PROGRAMS  Music and Movement for toddlers is Tuesday at 10 AM.  Story Time for ages 3 – 6, with picture books and crafts, is on Wednesday and Saturday at 10:30 AM.  Drop-in computer help hours will be held this Saturday the 3rd from 11 AM – 12 PM and next Tuesday the 6th from 6 – 7 PM.  Call the library or check out our website for all the details on all of our upcoming events. 

 

EBOOKS  Don’t forget that we have electronic books and audiobooks available for free download with your library card.  New titles arrive every Tuesday, so keep checking for the latest releases from your favorite authors.  As with our physical collections, you can put yourself on a notification list if the book you want is checked out.  Library staff will be happy to answer your questions about using your online account.

WORD OF THE WEEK  Cudbear: A powdered purple dye created from certain species of lichens.

 

BUDGET  The library would like to thank everyone who voted "yes" on the referendum.  You have made it possible for the library to continue buying new materials, presenting programs and serving our community.  We greatly appreciate your support.

 

FAMILY BOOK CLUB  This month we’ll be reading book one in A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Bad Beginning.  Come in this Thursday the 25th at 5 PM to learn about simple machines and create your own problem-solving inventions.

 

TIE DYE  Bring an item of clothing to the park this Saturday the 27th at 2 PM and make a tie-dye masterpiece.  (Wearing old clothes is also recommended; the dye will stain any fabric, whether you intended it to do so or not.)  This program will be canceled if the weather does not cooperate, so if in doubt call the library.

SOCIAL HOUR  We’ll be hosting coffee, treats, and conversation at this monthly event tomorrow (Wednesday) the 10th from 2 – 3 PM.

 

BUDGET  Curious about our upcoming referendum and about what makes our library so special to the community?  Stop in to one or both of our Open Houses this week to have your questions answered.  The first will be Wednesday, May 10th from 2 to 4 PM, which coincides with our regular monthly Social Hour.  The second Open House will be on Thursday, May 11th from 6:30 to 8 PM.  Please join us for hot coffee and enlightening conversation.

WORD OF THE WEEK  Aisling: Irish Gaelic for “dream,” the word also refers to a genre of poetry featuring visions that was popular in the 18th century.  It has recently seen use as a girl’s name.

 

MAY PROGRAMS  Thursday, May 18th will be a busy day.  At 2 PM we’ll be teaching a crafting class for adults, and then at 5:30 we’ll be watching a movie about the women who made NASA’s space flights possible.  Next month’s selection for the Family Book Club is A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning.  At 5 PM on Thursday the 25th we’ll be discussing the book and creating our own simple inventions with simple machines.  Finally, we’ll be bidding a colorful farewell to May as we tie-dye shirts in the park on Saturday the 27th at 2 PM.  Computer help sessions will be on the 2nd and the 23rd from 6 – 7 PM and the 6th and the 20th from 11 AM – 12 PM.  Social hour will be back on Wednesday the 10th at 2 PM.

 

LYME DISEASE  The library will be hosting a Lyme Disease Support Group at 6:30 PM on the third Monday of the month from May through October.  For more information, please contact Bonnie at 315-393-2950.
