WORD OF THE WEEK  Careen: to turn a ship onto its side to clean or repair it; or to speed forward, (often tilting from side to side as if out of control)

 

SOCIAL HOUR  Our monthly social hour hit a snag last week, so we’re trying again.  Stop in tomorrow the 20th for coffee, cookies, and conversation at 2 PM.

 

MOVIE NIGHT  Bring your friends and family for a film about an underwear-clad superhero this Thursday the 21st at 5:30 PM.  Popcorn and drinks will be provided.

 

FAMILY BOOK CLUB  Our selection this month is The Wild Robot by Peter Brown.  The discussion and creation session is next Thursday the 28th at 5 PM.  New members are always welcome.

WORD OF THE WEEK  Vacillate: to waver (go back and forth) between two (or more) options.

ADULT READING RAFFLE  This is your last week to enter our adult summer reading program.  Prizes include gift cards to The Dirty Gringo, Pizza Hut, and Joann’s Fabrics.  Just recommend a book or five to get your ticket – no purchase necessary.  Entries close this Saturday the 9th and the drawing will be on Monday the 11th.  Look for a list of community-recommended books online next week.

ADIRONDACK PASSES  You still have time to borrow the library’s discount passes for the Adirondack Experience and the Wild Center.  Both locations will close after Columbus Day in October, so don’t miss out.  Call the library or stop in for full details on how the passes work.

WORD OF THE WEEK  Quidnunc: A person who always wants to know the latest news and gossip (particularly if it’s scandalous.)

 

FAMILY BOOK CLUB  Join us this Thursday the 31st at 5 PM for the last family book club meeting of the summer.  We’ll be discussing The Little Prince and making wooden airplanes.  New families are always welcome.

 

SEPTEMBER PROGRAMS  All next month we’ll be having a children’s coloring contest.  Check our website or stop in for details.  Drop-in computer help hours will be on the 2nd and 16th from 11 AM – 12 PM and the 5th and 26th from 6 PM – 7 PM.  Social Hour will be on the 13th at 2 PM.  On the 14th at 2 PM we’ll have a bracelet-making class for adults.  Movie night (with an underwear-clad superhero) is the 21st at 5:30 PM, and Family Book Club meets on the 28th at 5 PM.  There will be no Story Time on the 16th, 20th, or 23rd in September.

WORD OF THE WEEK  Dissonance: The tension between two opposing concepts.  Often used in poetry (either in the meaning of words or their rhythm) and in music (with notes that aren’t usually played together.)

 

SLIME  Children ages 8 and up can come to the library this Thursday the 24th at 11 AM to learn how to make several different kinds of slime from common household ingredients. 

 

FREE CONCERT  Join us for a night of classic rock this Thursday the 24th at 6 PM.  The last library MOOD concert of the summer takes place at the gazebo in the park and will include a 50/50 raffle to support the library.

WORD OF THE WEEK  Pettifogging: describes small, unimportant (petty) details, or the people who spend too much attention on such details

 

MOVIE NIGHT  We’ll be showing a movie about a very bossy infant this Thursday the 17th at 5:30 PM.  As always, popcorn and beverages will be provided.  Bring your friends and join the fun!

 

ADULT SUMMER READING  Recommend books and earn a chance to win in our summer raffle.  Prizes include gift cards to The Dirty Gringo, Joann Fabrics and Crafts, and Pizza Hut, and the drawing will be a week after Labor Day.  Check out the bulletin board in the library for hints at what your neighbors are reading this summer.

WORD OF THE WEEK  Enchiridion: a small book meant to be carried around as a study guide or reference, often focused on philosophy, theology, law, poetry, or music

 

SOCIAL HOUR  Join us for Social Hour this Wednesday the 9th at 2 PM.  We’ll have coffee and treats; you provide the conversation.

 

FIDGET SPINNERS  Children ages 9 and up can learn to make their own fidget spinners this Thursday the 10th at 11 AM.  Registration is required for this program, as we have a limited amount of supplies.  Call the library or ask at the front desk to sign up.

 

ADULT CRAFT  Come in at 2 PM on Thursday the 10th to make an easy sunny summer centerpiece.

WORD OF THE WEEK  Balatron: a clown, jester, or just general buffoon (particularly a selfish one)

 

AUGUST EVENTS  Join us for an all-ages family concert with Nan Hoffman next Monday the 7th at 11 AM.  Children will have two opportunities to create toys at the library this month.  Those 9 and up can make their own fidget spinner on Thursday the 10th at 11 AM, while those 8 and up can make slime on Thursday the 24th at 11 AM.  Adults can come to a crafting class on Thursday the 10th at 2 PM.  Social hour is at 2 PM on the 9th, and movie night, featuring a film about a bossy baby, will be on Thursday the 17th at 5:30.  The final library/MOOD concert of the summer will be on Thursday the 24th at 6 PM.  To round out the month, our family book club will be reading The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupéry and making a wooden plane on Thursday the 31st at 5 PM.  New members are always welcome.

 

BOOK SALE  Thank you to everyone who helped make the book sale a success, whether you were a member of the Friends of the Library, a volunteer who helped with the setup or takedown, or a purchaser of books.  The proceeds raised will help the library do many things over the coming year.  Keep an eye out for the announcement of the next book sale.

WORD OF THE WEEK  Callithump: a noisy (but spirited) band or parade, especially one made up of non-traditional or improvised instruments like pots and pans or cowbells

 

BOOK SALE  Don’t forget to stop in for more great deals on CDs, books, puzzles, and more all this week.  The book sale doors will be open during regular library hours Monday through Friday, wrapping up with a $3 bag sale on Friday the 28th.  Help the Friends of the Library support fun and educational programing for 2017 and 2018, and pick up some new reads!

 

BUILDING CHALLENGE  Can you outsmart the Big Bad Wolf?  Find out this Thursday the 27th at 2 PM.  Children ages 5 – 9 are invited to try to build a huff-and-puff-proof home for a little piggy out of the materials we provide.

 

LIBRARY CLOSED  The library will be closed this Saturday the 29th.  Enjoy the fireworks and the parade!

WORD OF THE WEEK  Flitch: either a slab of wood cut from a tree trunk and used to make planks or (originally) a slab of bacon

 

MOOD 2017  Join us in the park this Wednesday the 19th at 6 PM for music from Ryan McNally and The Band Room Band.  The Friends will be running a 50/50 raffle during the show.  The next library concert in the Music on the Oswegatchie Delta series is August 24th.

 

POMPOM DROP  Help pompoms get to their destinations by constructing a series of chutes this Thursday the 20th at 2 PM.

 

FAMILY BOOK CLUB  We’ll be making miniature bows and arrows and discussing Wild Born by Brandon Mull this Thursday at 5 PM.

 

FAMILY CONCERT  Musician Tom Seiling will be here this Saturday the 22nd at 2 PM for a free fun family concert.  Join us!

WORD OF THE WEEK  Roseate: Pink in color, like a rose; often used to describe a sunrise.  Can also be used to describe an overly-optimistic outlook on life.

 

ART SHOW  Stop in Monday through Friday this week to view artwork created by patrons of the Seaway House.  The pieces are on display upstairs in the auditorium.  There will be a reception from 12 – 2 PM on Wednesday the 12th, featuring a special performance from the Lighthouse Band.

 

SOCIAL HOUR  After the reception, join us for our monthly social hour this Wednesday the 12th at 2 PM.  We’ll have coffee, treats, and conversation.
