WORD OF THE WEEK  Ratiocination: either a logically constructed chain of thought, or the process of constructing one

 

LIBRARY CLOSED  The library will be closed this Saturday, November 11th, in honor of Veterans Day.  We will be open as normal on Friday the 10th and Monday the 13th.

 

SOCIAL HOUR  Come in for sweets and coffee this Wednesday the 8th at 2 PM, and stay around to talk with your neighbors and browse the library’s collections.

 

BOTTLE CENTERPIECE  We’ll be using twine and glass bottles to make a simple, rustic vase this Thursday the 9th at 2 PM.  This craft is intended for our adult patrons, so come join us!

WORD OF THE WEEK  Careen: to turn a ship onto its side to clean or repair it; or to speed forward, (often tilting from side to side as if out of control)

 

SOCIAL HOUR  Our monthly social hour hit a snag last week, so we’re trying again.  Stop in tomorrow the 20th for coffee, cookies, and conversation at 2 PM.

 

MOVIE NIGHT  Bring your friends and family for a film about an underwear-clad superhero this Thursday the 21st at 5:30 PM.  Popcorn and drinks will be provided.

 

FAMILY BOOK CLUB  Our selection this month is The Wild Robot by Peter Brown.  The discussion and creation session is next Thursday the 28th at 5 PM.  New members are always welcome.

WORD OF THE WEEK  Quidnunc: A person who always wants to know the latest news and gossip (particularly if it’s scandalous.)

 

FAMILY BOOK CLUB  Join us this Thursday the 31st at 5 PM for the last family book club meeting of the summer.  We’ll be discussing The Little Prince and making wooden airplanes.  New families are always welcome.

 

SEPTEMBER PROGRAMS  All next month we’ll be having a children’s coloring contest.  Check our website or stop in for details.  Drop-in computer help hours will be on the 2nd and 16th from 11 AM – 12 PM and the 5th and 26th from 6 PM – 7 PM.  Social Hour will be on the 13th at 2 PM.  On the 14th at 2 PM we’ll have a bracelet-making class for adults.  Movie night (with an underwear-clad superhero) is the 21st at 5:30 PM, and Family Book Club meets on the 28th at 5 PM.  There will be no Story Time on the 16th, 20th, or 23rd in September.

WORD OF THE WEEK  Enchiridion: a small book meant to be carried around as a study guide or reference, often focused on philosophy, theology, law, poetry, or music

 

SOCIAL HOUR  Join us for Social Hour this Wednesday the 9th at 2 PM.  We’ll have coffee and treats; you provide the conversation.

 

FIDGET SPINNERS  Children ages 9 and up can learn to make their own fidget spinners this Thursday the 10th at 11 AM.  Registration is required for this program, as we have a limited amount of supplies.  Call the library or ask at the front desk to sign up.

 

ADULT CRAFT  Come in at 2 PM on Thursday the 10th to make an easy sunny summer centerpiece.

WORD OF THE WEEK  Balatron: a clown, jester, or just general buffoon (particularly a selfish one)

 

AUGUST EVENTS  Join us for an all-ages family concert with Nan Hoffman next Monday the 7th at 11 AM.  Children will have two opportunities to create toys at the library this month.  Those 9 and up can make their own fidget spinner on Thursday the 10th at 11 AM, while those 8 and up can make slime on Thursday the 24th at 11 AM.  Adults can come to a crafting class on Thursday the 10th at 2 PM.  Social hour is at 2 PM on the 9th, and movie night, featuring a film about a bossy baby, will be on Thursday the 17th at 5:30.  The final library/MOOD concert of the summer will be on Thursday the 24th at 6 PM.  To round out the month, our family book club will be reading The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupéry and making a wooden plane on Thursday the 31st at 5 PM.  New members are always welcome.

 

BOOK SALE  Thank you to everyone who helped make the book sale a success, whether you were a member of the Friends of the Library, a volunteer who helped with the setup or takedown, or a purchaser of books.  The proceeds raised will help the library do many things over the coming year.  Keep an eye out for the announcement of the next book sale.

WORD OF THE WEEK  Roseate: Pink in color, like a rose; often used to describe a sunrise.  Can also be used to describe an overly-optimistic outlook on life.

 

ART SHOW  Stop in Monday through Friday this week to view artwork created by patrons of the Seaway House.  The pieces are on display upstairs in the auditorium.  There will be a reception from 12 – 2 PM on Wednesday the 12th, featuring a special performance from the Lighthouse Band.

 

SOCIAL HOUR  After the reception, join us for our monthly social hour this Wednesday the 12th at 2 PM.  We’ll have coffee, treats, and conversation.

WORD OF THE WEEK  Burgeon: to grow rapidly, like a budding flower

 

RAFFLE  The Friends of the Library are raffling off a twin-sized quilt featuring the characters of Angry Birds Star Wars.  Tickets are $2 each or $3 for $5, and the drawing will be on July 23rd.  The quilt is hanging up in the library foyer.

 

FAMILY BOOK CLUB  Join us this Thursday the 29th at 5:30 PM to discuss Flora and Ulysses.  We’ll be writing squirrelly poetry on classic typewriters.

 

LIBRARY HOLIDAY  The library will be closed in celebration of Independence Day on Tuesday, July 4th

WORD OF THE WEEK  Bletcherous: ugly, either simply visually or because the object in question was poorly designed for its intended task

 

SOCIAL HOUR  Stop in for coffee, treats, and conversation this Wednesday the 14th at 2 PM.

 

SCULPT  This Thursday the 15th we will be running a family craft featuring salt dough.  Let your imagination run free and join us at 5 PM to create a masterpiece (or at least a lump of dough you can take home.)

SOCIAL HOUR  We’ll be hosting coffee, treats, and conversation at this monthly event tomorrow (Wednesday) the 10th from 2 – 3 PM.

 

BUDGET  Curious about our upcoming referendum and about what makes our library so special to the community?  Stop in to one or both of our Open Houses this week to have your questions answered.  The first will be Wednesday, May 10th from 2 to 4 PM, which coincides with our regular monthly Social Hour.  The second Open House will be on Thursday, May 11th from 6:30 to 8 PM.  Please join us for hot coffee and enlightening conversation.

WORD OF THE WEEK  Hythe: A small, man-made place on a river where a boat can land; a port or a harbor


RAFFLE  The Friends of the Library are raffling off a beautiful hand-carved walking stick crafted by the library’s own Bob Bowman.  Tickets are 1 for $1 and 3 for $2.  Thy will be available all month, as the drawing will be right after Memorial Day on Tuesday, May 30th.  For pictures visit our website, or stop by the library to see it in person.


 

MUSEUM PASSES  This year, the Friends of the Library are providing two passes to local Adirondack attractions.  As in previous years, one is to the Adirondack Experience in Blue Mountain Lake (formerly the Adirondack Museum.)  This pass provides 50% off admission to four adults, or two adults and their children.  New this year is a pass to the Wild Center in Tupper Lake.  With it, admission is only $10 each for two adults and free for accompanying children.  Both can be checked out at the library.  Please contact us for full details.  While the Wild Center opens for the season this Friday the 5th, the Adirondack Experience will not be open until Friday May 26th.  They make for great day or weekend trips.
