WORD OF THE WEEK  Ombrometer: a device used to measure the quantity of a rainfall (in other words, a rain gauge)

 

SOCIAL HOUR  We’ll be hosting coffee, treats, and conversation at this monthly event tomorrow (Wednesday) the 10th from 2 – 3 PM.

 

BUDGET  Curious about our upcoming referendum and about what makes our library so special to the community?  Stop in to one or both of our Open Houses this week to have your questions answered.  The first will be Wednesday, May 10th from 2 to 4 PM, which coincides with our regular monthly Social Hour.  The second Open House will be on Thursday, May 11th from 6:30 to 8 PM.  Please join us for hot coffee and enlightening conversation.

WORD OF THE WEEK  Causimomancy: a form of fortune-telling that involves observing objects placed in a fire.

 

HARRY POTTER  This Saturday February 4th is “Take Your Child to the Library Day.”  We’ll be hosting a variety of Harry-Potter-themed activities all day long, so stop in to learn about potions, the care of magical creatures, and more.

 

VALENTINES  Stop in any time in February to check out our display of beautiful vintage Valentine’s cards.  They are in both the rectangular and circular display cases next to the main desk.

 

FEBRUARY PROGRAMS  February may be short on days, but we have plenty of programs to keep you busy.  To start off the month children can make a cute candy holder on Thursday the 9th at 5 PM.  Adults and older children can stop in to make paper flowers on the following Monday, the 13th, at 3 PM.  Finally, we’ll be hosting the Thompson Park Zoo (with animal visitors) again on Friday the 24th at 2 PM.  All of our monthly programs are in place, as well.  Drop-in computer sessions will be this Saturday the 4th and Saturday the 18th from 11 AM – 12 PM and next Tuesday the 7th and Tuesday the 28th from 6 PM – 7 PM.  Social hour is next Wednesday the 8th at 2 PM.  Movie night will be Thursday the 16th at 5:30 PM.

RAFFLE  Stop in to enter a raffle for an adorable hand-made decorated snowman hat.  Tickets are $1 each.  The drawing will be Friday December 16th, so don’t delay!
 
EBOOKS  If you can’t make it into the library this month but own a tablet, eReader, smartphone, or computer, check out our large collection of digital material.  You can download eBooks, audiobooks, and magazines, all for free.  Our content provider, Overdrive, has issued a challenge: if patrons across the North Country check out 8,100 items, we’ll receive $1000 in credits toward new purchases.  If you enjoy digital reading, help us meet this goal!

RAFFLE  The Friends of the Library are raffling off a beautiful hand-painted chair featuring a view of the St. Lawrence River and the slogan “There’s no place like home.”  Pictures are available on our website and Facebook page, and the chair is on display at the library.  Tickets are 1 for $1, 3 for $2 and 15 for $5.  The raffle ends this Friday, so hurry in for your chance to win.


LIBRARY CLOSED  The library will be closed this Saturday, July 30th.  Enjoy the parade and all of this year’s Seaway Festival events.

 

SNAKES AND MORE  Reptiles Forever will be visiting the library tomorrow, Wednesday the 27th, at 1 PM with some scaly friends.  Weather permitting, this program will be outdoors.

FALL WREATH RAFFLE  Summer isn’t over yet, but we all know that Fall is around the corner.  Enter our new raffle to spruce up your home with some Autumn color this coming season: we have three hand-decorated wreaths available to win.  Tickets are 50 cents each or three for $1 and can be purchased at the main desk.  The raffle will run through Friday, September 11th.

 

SUMMER READING  This year’s summer reading program will end on Monday, August 31st.  All books must be read, prizes claimed, and raffle entries entered by that date. Comic books and superhero designs must also be submitted by the end of the month.  We hope everyone had fun, and we’re already looking forward to next year’s program!
