WORD OF THE WEEK  Eldritch: refers to something very eerie – most literally, other-worldly

 

BOOK SALE  The bargains continue this week during regular library hours – from books to magazines to puzzles to CDs and DVDs.  Don’t miss the bag sale this Saturday the 4th – for $5 you’ll be given a bag to stuff as full as you can.  (Of course, you can purchase more than one bag.)  All profits go the Friends of the Ogdensburg Public Library, which funds programming and other purchases for the library throughout the year.

 

CANDLE HOLDER  Children ages 5 and up can come make a fall-themed candle holder this Thursday November 2nd at 5 PM.

 

NOVEMBER EVENTS  For adults, our monthly crafting session involves making a twine-wrapped centerpiece.  Join us at 2 PM on Thursday the 9th.  Social Hour falls at 2 PM on Wednesday the 8th this month, while Movie Night is Thursday the 16th at 5:30 PM.  Survivalist and author Gene LaLonde returns to answer your survival-skills questions on Tuesday the 15th at 6 PM.  Drop-in computer help sessions will be Saturdays the 4th and 18th from 11 AM – 12 PM and Tuesdays the 7th and 28th from 6 PM – 7 PM.  Our last November event is Family Book Club, meeting on Thursday the 30th at 5 PM.  We’ll be reading The Year of the Dog by Grace Lin and trying traditional Taiwanese foods.

WORD OF THE WEEK  Bibliotaph: A person who hoards or hides books (and especially refuses to lend them for fear they won’t be returned)

 

HALLOWEEN PARTY  Our annual children’s Halloween party is back this Saturday the 28th from 3 – 4:45 PM.  We’ll have games, contests, and of course candy.  Be sure to come in costume!

 

BOOK SALE  It’s time for the Fall Book Sale.  Doors open at 5 PM on Thursday the 26th, when Friends members receive half-off regular prices.  Non-members will pay $3 for a hardcover book and $0.75 for a paperback.  (You can, however, join the Friends that night.)  The sale will be open from 9 – 5 on Friday the 27th and Saturday the 28th.  Prices will decrease to $2 and $0.50 respectively on those days, and further to $1/$0.25 the following week, when the sale will be available during regular library hours Monday – Friday.  We’ll wrap things up on Saturday November 4th with a bag sale – purchase a bag for $5 and fill it with whatever it can hold.  The book sale also features non-book items, including CDs, DVDs, puzzles, magazines, and more.  All profits go the Friends of the Ogdensburg Public Library, which funds programming and other purchases for the library throughout the year.

 

FAMILY BOOK CLUB  You have your choice of books this month: either some of R. L. Stine’s Goosebumps books or, if you prefer something less spooky, Raina Telgemeier’s Smile.  We’ll be discussing the books and making Halloween decorations in a jar this Thursday the 26th at 5 PM.  New families are always welcome!

WORD OF THE WEEK  Perambulate: to take a slow walk (alone or in company) just for the pleasure of walking

 

OCTOBER EVENTS  Edible slime returns just in time for Halloween.  Join us on Thursday the 12th at 5 PM to make goop out of common kitchen ingredients.  Movie night will feature an action-packed film on Thursday the 19th at 5:30 PM, and this month’s family book club on the 26th involves the Goosebumps series by R. L. Stine (or, if you prefer, Smile by Raina Telgemeier.)  There will be a pumpkiny crafting session for adults on Thursday the 19th at 2 PM.  Finally, we’ll be wrapping up the month with a Halloween Party for children ages 3 – 12 on Saturday the 28th at 3 PM.  Join us in costume for treats, games, and more.

 

BOOK SALE  The Friends of the Library will be holding their autumn book sale from Thursday October 26th through Friday November 3rd, with the bag sale on Saturday the 4th.  There will be plenty of bargains on books, DVDs, and more.

BOOK SALE  Don’t forget to stop in for more great deals on CDs, books, puzzles, and more all this week.  The book sale doors will be open during regular library hours Monday through Friday, wrapping up with a $3 bag sale on Friday the 28th.  Help the Friends of the Library support fun and educational programing for 2017 and 2018, and pick up some new reads!

 

BUILDING CHALLENGE  Can you outsmart the Big Bad Wolf?  Find out this Thursday the 27th at 2 PM.  Children ages 5 – 9 are invited to try to build a huff-and-puff-proof home for a little piggy out of the materials we provide.

 

LIBRARY CLOSED  The library will be closed this Saturday the 29th.  Enjoy the fireworks and the parade!

ART SHOW  Stop in Monday through Friday this week to view artwork created by patrons of the Seaway House.  The pieces are on display upstairs in the auditorium.  There will be a reception from 12 – 2 PM on Wednesday the 12th, featuring a special performance from the Lighthouse Band.

 

SOCIAL HOUR  After the reception, join us for our monthly social hour this Wednesday the 12th at 2 PM.  We’ll have coffee, treats, and conversation.

WORD OF THE WEEK  Burgeon: to grow rapidly, like a budding flower

 

RAFFLE  The Friends of the Library are raffling off a twin-sized quilt featuring the characters of Angry Birds Star Wars.  Tickets are $2 each or $3 for $5, and the drawing will be on July 23rd.  The quilt is hanging up in the library foyer.

 

FAMILY BOOK CLUB  Join us this Thursday the 29th at 5:30 PM to discuss Flora and Ulysses.  We’ll be writing squirrelly poetry on classic typewriters.

 

LIBRARY HOLIDAY  The library will be closed in celebration of Independence Day on Tuesday, July 4th

LOCAL BOTTLES  Stop by the library to take a look at a collection of glass bottles used by local companies in the 19th and early 20th centuries.  They are in the long and circular display cases.
