WORD OF THE WEEK  Enchiridion: a small book meant to be carried around as a study guide or reference, often focused on philosophy, theology, law, poetry, or music

 

SOCIAL HOUR  Join us for Social Hour this Wednesday the 9th at 2 PM.  We’ll have coffee and treats; you provide the conversation.

 

FIDGET SPINNERS  Children ages 9 and up can learn to make their own fidget spinners this Thursday the 10th at 11 AM.  Registration is required for this program, as we have a limited amount of supplies.  Call the library or ask at the front desk to sign up.

 

ADULT CRAFT  Come in at 2 PM on Thursday the 10th to make an easy sunny summer centerpiece.

WORD OF THE WEEK  Balatron: a clown, jester, or just general buffoon (particularly a selfish one)

 

AUGUST EVENTS  Join us for an all-ages family concert with Nan Hoffman next Monday the 7th at 11 AM.  Children will have two opportunities to create toys at the library this month.  Those 9 and up can make their own fidget spinner on Thursday the 10th at 11 AM, while those 8 and up can make slime on Thursday the 24th at 11 AM.  Adults can come to a crafting class on Thursday the 10th at 2 PM.  Social hour is at 2 PM on the 9th, and movie night, featuring a film about a bossy baby, will be on Thursday the 17th at 5:30.  The final library/MOOD concert of the summer will be on Thursday the 24th at 6 PM.  To round out the month, our family book club will be reading The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupéry and making a wooden plane on Thursday the 31st at 5 PM.  New members are always welcome.

 

BOOK SALE  Thank you to everyone who helped make the book sale a success, whether you were a member of the Friends of the Library, a volunteer who helped with the setup or takedown, or a purchaser of books.  The proceeds raised will help the library do many things over the coming year.  Keep an eye out for the announcement of the next book sale.

WORD OF THE WEEK  Roseate: Pink in color, like a rose; often used to describe a sunrise.  Can also be used to describe an overly-optimistic outlook on life.

 

ART SHOW  Stop in Monday through Friday this week to view artwork created by patrons of the Seaway House.  The pieces are on display upstairs in the auditorium.  There will be a reception from 12 – 2 PM on Wednesday the 12th, featuring a special performance from the Lighthouse Band.

 

SOCIAL HOUR  After the reception, join us for our monthly social hour this Wednesday the 12th at 2 PM.  We’ll have coffee, treats, and conversation.

WORD OF THE WEEK  Ignescent: capable of or actually producing sparks, like a flint used for fire-starting; can also refer to a person in a “fiery” mood

 

MOVIE NIGHT  Be our guest this Thursday the 22nd at 5:30 PM for popcorn, drinks, and a live-action Disney movie on the screen in our auditorium.

 

MUSIC  The MOOD (Music on the Oswegatchie Delta) Concert series will have performances in Library Park this summer.  The shows will be June 22, July 6, July 19, and August 24 at 6 PM at the gazebo.  Please bring your own chairs or blankets to sit on.  The Friends of the Library will be holding a 50/50 raffle during each concert.

 

BOOK SALE  The Friends of the Library will be holding their summer book sale from 5 PM on July 20th (a Thursday) to 5 PM July 28th (a Friday.)  We are no longer accepting donations for the sale due to a lack of space.  If you have items you wish to donate, please hang on to them until the Fall.  Contact library director Penny Kerfien with any questions.

WORD OF THE WEEK  Aisling: Irish Gaelic for “dream,” the word also refers to a genre of poetry featuring visions that was popular in the 18th century.  It has recently seen use as a girl’s name.

 

MAY PROGRAMS  Thursday, May 18th will be a busy day.  At 2 PM we’ll be teaching a crafting class for adults, and then at 5:30 we’ll be watching a movie about the women who made NASA’s space flights possible.  Next month’s selection for the Family Book Club is A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning.  At 5 PM on Thursday the 25th we’ll be discussing the book and creating our own simple inventions with simple machines.  Finally, we’ll be bidding a colorful farewell to May as we tie-dye shirts in the park on Saturday the 27th at 2 PM.  Computer help sessions will be on the 2nd and the 23rd from 6 – 7 PM and the 6th and the 20th from 11 AM – 12 PM.  Social hour will be back on Wednesday the 10th at 2 PM.

 

LYME DISEASE  The library will be hosting a Lyme Disease Support Group at 6:30 PM on the third Monday of the month from May through October.  For more information, please contact Bonnie at 315-393-2950.

WORD OF THE WEEK Ranidaphobia: A fear of frogs. (Also occasionally used is the term batrachophobia, a fear of amphibians (frogs, toads, newts, etc.) in general.)

 

MOVIE NIGHT Come watch an animated movie featuring the adventures of some popular wild-haired toys this Thursday the 20th at 5:30 PM. Popcorn will be provided, so bring your friends and family.

 

SEED LIBRARY Our seed library has been restocked. We have selections ranging from beans to zucchini, including a number of varieties you’ve probably never tried before as well as flowers to brighten up your lawn. The seed library is completely free. Just come in, browse the seed packets, then transfer a few seeds into one of the smaller envelopes to take home with you. (There is no hard limit on what you can take; we just ask that you leave some for your neighbors.) Enjoy your plants all season and then, if you can, collect some of the seeds in the Fall and help us replenish the library for next year. Happy gardening!

WORD OF THE WEEK  Desipience – Foolishness or silliness

                                    

TAX HELP  There are still some open slots for free tax help and electronic filing tomorrow April 5th from 10 AM to 4 PM.  These individual sessions, lasting about an hour, will be conducted by volunteers from the New York State Tax Department.  Please see our website for details and requirements.

 

EGG DYEING  Join us this Thursday at 5 PM.  We’ll start off with a nature walk around the park (weather permitting.)  Indoors we’ll learn how to dye hard-boiled eggs with natural materials and use the leaves we’ve collected to create silhouettes on the shells.

WORD OF THE WEEK  Zastruga: A ridge formed by the wind on a snow-covered surface.  These are usually found in series, rather than alone; the plural is zastrugi.

 

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS  Tonight the 21st at 6:00 PM survival expert Gene LaLonde will be at the library to offer advice on getting through unexpected emergencies, from ice storms to EMP pulses.  He will also discuss his novel A Question of Survival, set in the woods of Vermont after a national crisis.

 

MOVIE NIGHT  We’ll be watching Disney’s latest animated feature (a trip to a far more tropical climate) this Thursday the 23rd at 5:30 PM.  Join us for popcorn, drinks, and an escape from all this snow.

WORD OF THE WEEK  Arctophile: Someone who collects or studies teddy bears.

 

TAX FORMS  Both Federal and State forms are now available at the library.  Their numbers are very limited, and we are not able to reorder, so you may wish to stop in soon.  These are mostly the basic return forms.  If you need a form we do not have, you can print it out from the internet at the library for a cost of fifteen cents per page.

 

MOVIE NIGHT  Our monthly movie night will be this Thursday the 16th at 5:30 PM.  We’ll be watching a film about a group of children with some very peculiar gifts.  Popcorn and soda will be provided.

WORD OF THE WEEK  Eirenicon: A proposal of peace and solidarity

 

WALLET RAFFLE  The Friends of the Library are raffling off two hand-made men’s leather wallets.  Tickets are $1 each and there will be two winners.  Both drawings will be held on February 3rd, so don’t miss your chance.  The wallets can be viewed on top of the long display case next to the front desk.

 

MOVIE NIGHT  We’ll be watching the adventures of a blue animated fish this Thursday the 19th at 5:30 PM.  Join us for popcorn, soda, and fun.

 

CRAFT  We’ll be making stained “glass” mandalas out of old CDs, paint, and ink next Thursday the 26th at 5 PM.
